Ortho-K for athletes: clear vision during sport, without glasses or contacts

If you train regularly in Barcelona, Ortho-K can be the best way to get clear daytime vision without glasses, without contacts in your eye during activity and without refractive surgery. The lenses are worn only at night; during sport the eye is free.

Ortho-K and sport in depth

Why Ortho-K appeals to athletes.

Soft contacts can shift or get dirty with sweat, lose hydration in the wind, get irritated by dust and pose a risk in water sports due to contamination. Glasses fog up, fall off, limit peripheral vision and are incompatible with many helmets, masks or technical movements. Ortho-K eliminates these issues because the eye is free throughout the entire sports day.

Water sports (swimming, triathlon, water polo, surfing, sailing, freediving).

Probably where Ortho-K shines most. Swimming with soft contacts is discouraged due to the risk of Acanthamoeba keratitis; prescription swim goggles are an option, but limited to the pool. With Ortho-K you can swim, do open water, surf or freedive with sharp vision and nothing in your eye.

Running, trail, cycling and MTB.

No glasses fogging up, no contacts drying out in the wind or filling with dust on the track or trail. Better peripheral vision and the ability to use non-prescription sunglasses, opening up the catalogue and improving UV protection.

Team and ball sports (football, basketball, handball, volleyball, rugby, padel, tennis).

In contact sports glasses are uncomfortable and risky, and contacts can shift or fall out after a hit. Ortho-K solves both: free eye, no risk of losing a lens mid-game.

Martial arts, boxing, judo, BJJ, climbing, gymnastics.

Any sport with contact, intense sweat, face grips or sudden changes of posture benefits from having nothing in the eye. Ortho-K is probably the best optical option for these profiles.

Skiing, snowboarding, mountain sports.

Non-prescription goggles or sunglasses, no contacts drying out in cold, dry mountain air. Visual stability throughout the day is very high.

Young athletes. One of the profiles that benefit most

vision without glasses during training and matches, better performance and a fit within a myopia-control strategy during growth.

What Ortho-K does not solve.

It does not correct advanced presbyopia on its own, does not replace medical evaluation if there's eye disease and requires consistency and check-ups. Not all eyes are candidates: the final decision depends on prescription, corneal shape and ocular health.

Timing and sports planning.

If you have a major competition, we recommend starting 2-3 months ahead so vision is fully stabilised on the key day. For regular training, most people notice improvements from the first nights.

How the assessment works.

Full optometric review, ocular health, corneal topography and a conversation about your sports, schedule and goals. By the end you'll know whether Ortho-K is suitable for you and, if so, a realistic timeline.

Frequently asked questions

+Can I swim and dive without issues with Ortho-K?

Yes. The lenses are only used at night; while swimming, recreational diving or freediving you have nothing in your eye, eliminating the keratitis risk associated with using soft contacts in water.

+Is it safe for contact sports (boxing, BJJ, judo, rugby)?

Yes, precisely because the eye is free during training or a fight. There are no glasses to break and no contacts to shift after a hit.

+How does sweat or dust from trail/MTB affect it?

It doesn't. Corneal reshaping happens during sleep; during sport the eye has no lens and no prescription glasses, so neither sweat nor dust interact with any optical system.

+Does it work for athletes with high myopia?

There's a usual prescription range where it works very well. For higher myopia we assess individually with topography and sometimes combine strategies.

+How far ahead of a competition should I start?

Ideally 2-3 months before to ensure stable vision and room for adjustments. For day-to-day training, improvement is usually very quick.

+Is Ortho-K better than daily contacts for sport?

It depends on the sport and routine. For water, contact or high-sweat sports, Ortho-K brings clear advantages because you carry nothing in your eye. For very occasional sport, the follow-up it requires may not be worth it.
